Renters for Recovery | Life Takes You to Unexpected Places-Love Brings You Home

Updated: Mar 24

When someone completes a recovery program or is released from incarceration, the next step can often be the hardest—rebuilding a stable, self-sufficient life. That’s where Renters for Recovery comes in. Founded by Shay Smith and Stephanie Harris, this nonprofit provides a crucial missing piece in the recovery journey: safe housing for women combined with structured support.

The Birth of Renters for Recovery

Shay Smith’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and a deep calling to help others. Once facing a potential 20-year habitual offense sentence, she was given a second chance through drug court. During her recovery journey, she realized that treatment was a great start, but the real challenge was what happened after—when people were expected to rebuild their lives without adequate support.

Through her work as a peer support specialist, Shay saw firsthand the gaps in existing recovery housing. Many programs simply provided a place to stay but offered no guidance on securing employment, attending support meetings, or accessing counseling. Determined to change this, she began researching, networking, and planning—leading to the creation of Renters for Recovery.

What Renters for Recovery Offers

More than just a roof over someone’s head, Renters for Recovery is a structured support system designed to help women transition successfully into independent living. The program operates in three phases. Here are some of the goals for each:

1. First 30 Days – Residents are not pressured to find a job immediately. Instead, they focus on adjusting, attending meetings, finding a sponsor, and getting counseling.

2. Phase Two – Women maintain employment, continue to attend meetings and counseling. Bi-weekly passes allowed. Visitors allwed during visiting hours.

3. Final Phase – Maintain employment, continue to attend meetings and counseling. Weekly passes allowed. Residents work toward financial independence, securing stable employment, and planning their transition to permanent housing.

Over its first year, Renters for Recovery helped seven women—with life-changing impacts. Some have gone on to secure their own apartments, reconnect with family, and even enroll in school. The program’s community support has been instrumental, with people donating furniture, funds, and encouragement. They currently have four women living in the home.

Shay’s vision doesn’t stop here. Renters for Recovery aims to expand its reach, supporting even more women in need.
