The Arc of Southeast Mississippi (The Arc SEMS) has been a cornerstone of support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Hattiesburg since its establishment in 1961. Over the decades, it has evolved into a comprehensive service provider, offering programs such as the Rise and Shine adult day program, Summer Adventures, weekend respite care, and inclusive community events like Buddy Parties. Under the dedicated leadership of Executive Director Cindy Pennington, the organization has significantly expanded its facilities and services, all while fostering a more inclusive and accepting community.

Cindy Pennington’s Journey
Pennington's association with The Arc began in 1988 when she worked as a special education teacher in the Summer Adventures leisure program. Her passion for the organization and its participants led her to take on more responsibilities, eventually becoming the Summer Program Director. Her commitment and vision culminated in her appointment as Executive Director, a role she has held for over 25 years.
Reflecting on her journey, Pennington shares, "I've witnessed a major transformation of services for people with disabilities and a greater acceptance and inclusiveness for them in our community."
Comprehensive Services Tailored to Individual Needs
The Arc SEMS offers a range of programs designed to support individuals with disabilities and their families:
Rise and Shine Adult Day Program: Serving approximately 45 participants, this program focuses on holistic development, encompassing physical, spiritual, mental, social, and creative wellness. (The Arc of Southeast Mississippi)
Summer Adventures: A leisure program that provides enriching activities during the summer months.
Weekend Respite Care: Offering families much-needed breaks while ensuring participants receive quality care.
Buddy Parties: In collaboration with Hattiesburg Junior Auxiliary, these events cater to around 150 attendees, fostering community engagement and fun.
Additionally, The Arc organizes seasonal events like tailgate parties with the USM baseball team and trunk-or-treats at local schools, promoting community integration.

Overcoming Challenges with Community Support
Operating a facility that serves numerous individuals daily comes with its set of challenges. Maintenance issues, such as plumbing and electrical repairs, are frequent due to the high foot traffic. Pennington notes, "When you've got 45-plus and then staff and students and volunteers, there's a lot of people. So, there's just a lot of maintenance that we need." Despite these hurdles, The Arc has achieved significant milestones. In 2020, it became a certified program with the Department of Mental Health, enabling Medicaid billing for services. Notably, the organization's facilities, including a large house, multi-purpose building, pottery studio, pavilion, and expansive outdoor area, were developed entirely through grant funding, avoiding the need for loans.

Embracing Abilities: Changing Perceptions
Pennington emphasizes the importance of recognizing the capabilities of individuals with disabilities: "They are people just like us! They enjoy being a part of the community. They have ability. They have preferences and deserve to have a voice and choice."
This perspective is evident in the organization's approach, where participants are given choices in their activities, fostering independence and self-expression. Programs like the pottery studio and show choir performances at The Saenger Theater highlight the talents and creativity of the participants.
How You Can Make a Difference
Community involvement is pivotal to The Arc's success. There are numerous ways for local residents, churches, businesses, and students to contribute:
Teaching Tuesdays: Share your expertise by conducting sessions on various topics, from cooking to financial literacy.
Volunteer Opportunities: Assist during events, help with facility maintenance, or support daily programs.
Fundraisers: Participate in or organize events like cookouts, crawfish boils, or the annual golf ball drop to raise funds.
